In recent times due to COVID-19 and it’s implications, depression is something that many individuals are struggling with more than ever. What is depression and what are the symptoms? Depression symptoms include low mood, brain fog, fatigue, physical heaviness, overly sleeping, negative and hopeless feelings and suicidal thoughts. How can holistic therapy assist with depression? With holistic therapy we explore a variety of healing modalities to tend to someone's depression symptoms in a dynamic way.
With my clients I typically have them recount their days from when they get up to when they go to sleep and everything that happens in between. I have them recall what their mood is like during the day and note any times that they may be getting upset or feeling depressed. We also review what their coping strategies are when they are feeling depressed and to what capacity they have to implement those strategies. From there we will look at designing a custom plan that helps them manage your depression.
Sleep Hygiene For Depression Management
Taking a look at your sleep hygiene is essential because lack of sleep is a large contributor to depression as well as increased anxiety. Some holistic methods to consider for better sleep are things like essential oils and crystals but there are practical approaches as well for example, no screen time after 7PM. I also encourage my clients to journal and to get outside more to boast their sunlight intake.
It’s also a great practice to consider what you wear for bed, make sure your bedtime clothing is comfortable and ideal for temperature control while you rest. The ideal bedtime temperature for your sleeping space is currently 65 degrees per recent research. Consider if you have quality bedtime feedback for all of your bedtime practice. Do you have quality pillows and blankets that make you comfortable while sleeping? Does your mattress cause a full nights worth of tossing and turning or deep rest? Does the air circulation help you rest? If not consider if you sleep more soundly with your windows slightly open to let in cool air or to turn on a fan to help circulate your airflow while you rest.
Nutrition For Depression Management
As a certified nutritionist I have the knowledge of what supplements will help enhance mood and energy. I will often recommend a vitamin B supplement to my clients for a mood boast. I have the ability to flex between a client who’s primary focus is nutrition and offer therapy support while they make changes to their food habits or I can offer a therapy client nutrition support and make suggestions on supplements to improve their mood.
Holistic Depression Management: Bringing it all together
By using integrative therapy I combine more than one method of therapy to manage and treat clients who are experiencing depression. We are able to treat the depression symptoms and with the holistic methods we can align with depression reversal. It is essential that we take care of our mental health especially in our current times and as we move into the winter season which is when many people will experience Seasonal Affective Disorder.
