In light of September being suicide awareness month I am sharing some helpful tips and tools for anyone who may be trying to understand if they are experiencing suicidal thoughts or if you are concerned that a loved one may be experiencing suicidal ideation.
The first thing to note about suicidal ideation is that it is a process which involves contemplating ending your life. Having suicidal thoughts can be extreme such as the cases where someone is actively attempting to end their life but they can also be fleeting thoughts that pass. It’s important to be mindful of what a suicidal thought can present itself as.
Before any action can be taken a thought must first occur. Generally there are some symptoms that lead up to a suicidal thought. You may be experiencing depression symptoms that have been lingering for a period of time. Some symptoms may include low mood, brain fog, issues with sleep either getting too much or too little, physical fatigue, irritable and severe sense of hopelessness and helplessness. If you have loved ones that are openly discussing feelings of hopelessness or helplessness that is a good space to encourage them to seek support. Often times individuals experiencing depression and suicidal ideation feel like they are isolated so it is important to reassure the individual that they are not alone and support is available to them.
I often recommend a variety of practices to my clients experiencing depression and anxiety. From holistic practices like journaling, crystals, getting outside, etc to traditional methods like therapy. Implementing these practices will help you loosen the grip that depression has on you.
When you are depressed your mindset is severely affected. Your mind is not functioning with healthy thoughts instead it is filled with negative and hopeless thoughts. Although your mind may be telling you negative things you can make the choice to choose better thoughts. In addition to choosing better thoughts, I encourage you to do one small productive task a day. If it’s something as small as getting out of bed or brushing your teeth it still counts. All those little actions add up and become big wins over time. Another thing that you want to do is get your mind in a space where it is consuming positive inspiration daily. I encourage all my clients to create a gratitude practice. This will help you balance out the negative and positive thoughts. If there are only negative thoughts coming in and being retained it makes it hard for your brain to move out of the negative space. Depression can make you want to isolate however it’s very important to socialize and be around others. Talk to someone about how you are feeling and spend time in other peoples presence.
It’s always better to know what resources you have available to you before you may need them so I have included the National Suicide Prevention Hotline number here NATIONAL SUICIDE PREVENTION HOTLINE #: 1-800-273-8255. Add the number into your phone or write it somewhere that you will find it easily. If you are ever in need of the number you know that you have it readily available. If you do find yourself in a situation that you feel unsafe with yourself and don’t think that you can provide proper care for yourself then I encourage you to go to your local ER to get the support you need.
