In the current time of quarantine, COVID-19, the upcoming election and the standard everyday stress there is a lot going on for many people and stress management is a topic that many could benefit from. We will explore stress management from a holistic perspective. There is a wide range of holistic therapy practices that you can incorporate today at home.
When I personally feel stress increasing in my life it is an indicator that I need to slow down and switch gears to manage my stress. Stress management can be achieved through holistic avenues. Many peoples versions of stress management involve some form of alcoholic beverage or bingeing Netflix however that isn’t the most productive use of anyones time nor is it beneficial for your overall health. You should take time to ask yourself what you want to be doing with your time and your energy. The first step in holistic stress management is exploring what it is that you need in the moment. Slow down and take inventory of what isn’t working for you, if you feel tired, over energized, restless, etc. Identifying what you are feeling within yourself will help you determine the tool or practise that can help you to recover.
Stress management techniques
One method I find myself reaching for a lot is using my acupressure mat. While I’m sitting on my mat I typically diffuse essential oils that specifically help with stress. Red light therapy can also be a useful tool. Typically after practicing a holistic stress management technique such as an acupressure mat session you are better equipped to continue the process of deciding what else you need to do for the day.
Creating a stress management plan
I strongly encourage you to take some time to create your own stress management plan and toolkit to implement when you are feeling stress increase in your life. There are numerous techniques that you can have in your toolkit including the ones I have just mentioned above but also meditation, crystals, going for a walk or another form of exercise. You may want to consider creating a peaceful spot in your home where you can go to practice your plan and techniques. Having a plan in place before you need it will be beneficial for your mental health as well as your overall health and wellness.
Here’s What I Do For My Stress Management Plan
I love to organize my stress management plan with a daily approach where I choose (3) wellness and self care activities that I can practice for the day ahead. Lately it’s been nice to start the day with a journal session and morning gratitude practice. I also will opt to meditate or go for a short wellness walk. In addition to considering self care as a daily practice throughout the day, I also consider daily movement to be important. I generally complete a 20-minute cardio workout 3-5x per week and fuse in extra walking or stretching for rest days. Last but not least, there’s a simple holistic nutrition habit building practice I love to do where I keep it simple and just focus on eating vegetables daily and getting enough water to feel hydrated. The idea is to make healthy self care practice simple and realistic without having to set aside large amounts of time for practice, however some time will be important for your personal commitment and investment.
