3 Holistic Tips To Cancel Imposter Syndrome And Self Doubt Mindset
Today, I wanted to share my top 3 tips from my masterclass on cancelling imposter syndrome and self doubt. I understand that as busy individuals you may not have the time to watch a full masterclass but would still like to work on cultivating a healthy relationship with self in terms of self acceptance and self beliefs so read on for how you can do just that.
Challenge Your Thinking
Challenge whether your imposter syndrome thought, fear or belief is a matter of you not having the experience and exploring that instead of having beliefs like you aren’t good enough or you don’t deserve to have what it is that you want. The first question you need to ask is if the situation is just a matter of you not knowing how to do it or feeling unfamiliar. When we aren’t sure what lies ahead or aren’t familiar with how to do something already this is typically when we decide to give into imposter syndrome thinking. A real world example of this is getting a new job. Picture that you are just starting your first day at your new job and you begin to feel as though you won’t be accepted because you don’t already know everything. In reality you’re new to the position and figuring things out. In this example, this isn’t necessarily an issue of imposter syndrome but more so an opportunity to clarify what it is you are meant to be doing in your role. Contemplate this tip often so you can be thinking from a place of data versus emotion.
Consume Your Inspiration Daily
In my experience I have found the more that we create a bubble around our goal, dream or whatever is on the other side of our imposter syndrome the less scary it feels to keep moving forward. If you are wanting to do something unique that you haven’t done before and are having issues with imposter syndrome then look for resources that you can reference for regular inspiration sessions to remind you of what is possible. For example when I was writing my book I personally struggled with imposter syndrome. I knew I had some good ideas and that I had helped some people previously but I wasn’t sure if that was good enough to write a book. I had self doubt thoughts such as “What if I write the book and nobody buys it” or “What if I write the book and someone tells me I don’t know what I’m talking about”. Writing and publishing a book was something I had never done before so I was also struggling with unfamiliar territory. When I began to look at examples of black female writers who have self published their own books and by examining their stories it began to minimize the feelings of unworthiness or inexperience. Inspiration can help build your confidence.
Adjust Automatic Mindset
When you catch yourself thinking that you are unworthy I encourage you to challenge that thought and don’t allow that to be your final thought in your head. If you’re having a moment where you find yourself thinking that you are not enough in general I want you to replace it with a positive thought about how you are good enough, you do have the proper experience and you are qualified to help people. We want to be replacing our negative thoughts with positive ones as often as we catch ourselves in a negative thought cycle. If we allow the negative thoughts to remain then they potentially become more true to ourselves. The more we challenge the negative thoughts the more we allow the positive thoughts to be true to us. We have neurocognitive pathways that prefer consistency in our thoughts if we think more positive thoughts our brain will naturally begin to select positive thoughts for itself as well. If you ever need a quick mindset reset I would encourage you to do something like a breathing exercise or meditation such as this one here.
To sum it up we all experience imposter syndrome at one point or another but by following the above steps we can help it happen less frequently so we are able to achieve our goals. To summarize the point again they were challenging your thinking to determine whether you are in fact just inexperienced, consuming inspiration so you have the encouragement to proceed and finally, adjusting automatic mindset so that your brain is wired to reach for positive thoughts first.
