This blog post is about a topic I get asked about frequently, it’s something that a lot of us experience and that is burnout. If you are feeling exhausted, completely checked out and don’t want to continue feeling that way then I have provided tips to help you navigate this.
GET CLEAR
The first thing I would recommend to avoid and prevent burnout is to assess your current situation. Get clear on what the factors are for you to feel burnt out. Most of us have experienced burnout before so we can typically recognize why we are feeling burnt out. Your burnout could come from a variety of factors such as work or parenting. What areas are currently causing you stress and anxiety. Drill down and get to the heart of why you feel the way you feel. Is it external or internal factors? What actions played a role in your burnout? Whatever it is, journal about it so you know where you stand. The last time I was feeling burnt out was during my time as a resident therapist in a medical clinic. I was adjusting to working via phone versus in person due to the new pandemic measures. The team I work with also wasn’t given the proper support. I also had limited time for breaks in between sessions so I could decompress and prepare for my next sessions. I didn’t feel like I could give my clients my best since I was not at my best.
DETERMINE YOUR NEEDS
Once you have evaluated situations where you have experienced burnout you can determine what it is that you need to avoid it in the future. If you notice that you feel burnt out as an entrepreneur then it’s valuable to ask yourself what you need more of. For example, when I’m working with my clients I know that I need more support such as having someone take over the admin aspects and I can focus on my client. A strong support system is essential when avoiding burnout because you know you have individuals that you can lean on when you need them. From my previous example I also recognized in myself that I needed to take breaks in between my client sessions so I could show up as my best self for each session.
GIVE YOURSELF WHAT YOU NEED
We have the mentality to push through what we’re doing no matter what and we often neglect to give ourselves what we need even though we know we need it. Although you may be able to get through it doesn’t mean you have to. You can give yourself permission to take things that you need. I encourage you to find out what you absolutely need to do and what you don’t so you can build your schedule around that. My mantra for achieving this has been “I am removing tension in order to gain more peace and presence”. It’s essential for us to give ourselves what we need so we can avoid increasing stress and anxiety in our lives.
