Today’s blog post is another addition into my minimalism and mental health series. I’m continuing to explore the concept of removing distractions in my life to reduce anxiety, stress or other moods such as depression. I think there are many benefits of minimalism and I’m excited to explore them more. When I’m sharing theories with my audience I find it valuable to practice them. As a mental health holistic therapist and someone who practices mindfulness often I still find it helpful to try new practices. Today I’m exploring the concept of a capsule wardrobe. This is something I’ve been wanting to experiment with since my previous post on minimalism.
GETTING STARTED AND WHAT TO KEEP
I started by pulling out all the clothes in my closet and sorting them into piles of things I wanted to keep and things I want to let go of. I went through a variety of methods to determine what things I wanted to get rid of.
What you decide to keep will be very unique and personal to you. It will also largely depend on your lifestyle, what you do for work, what your hobbies are, etc. Due to the current state of the world and not much going on there were many things I decided to put into a maybe pile because although I’m not going out at the moment and wearing those pieces doesn’t mean I won’t be in the future.
REALIZATIONS
I personally have come to realize that I don’t like wearing basics. I’m not interested in wearing plain white t-shirts. I buy them but never wear them. I also am not interested in keeping anything that I don’t like the material of, if it doesn’t breathe well it’s not for me. I’m at a place in my life that I only want things that bring me peace including my clothing. I’ve always strived for that in my life but since starting my minimalism journey I realize that I may have been in my own way in ways that were not obvious to me before. My family and I had recently moved from California to New Mexico and we had decided that we were going to try to pack light. While cleaning out the closet I realized that I had still packed a lot more than I needed. It was good to determine that I need a lot less than I thought I did and I am able to part with the things I don’t need or use. When I was going through my things it was also apparent to me that the things I was getting rid of were things I knew I should have gotten rid of a long time ago but was holding onto them for convenience.
I’m excited to donate my items to someone who will love and enjoy them. As I move forward with my minimalism journey I hope to find more tips and tricks to pass along to you. I think minimalism is one of the great tools we can use in our lives to reduce stress and anxiety. The process of cleaning out my closet in particular has been a great way to start a new year although it would be beneficial at any time.
