Today’s post is all about letting go of Instagram and disconnecting. The reason why I wanted to create this post and share this information with you all is because social media has been an increasingly useful tool to connect especially over the course of the pandemic. I can understand how there is an increase for a lot of us with how much we access social media tools, however it does have drawbacks in regards to how it affects our health so we will discuss those below. I have personally found that I preferred Instagram over Facebook but for the purpose of this post you can swap out whatever platform you prefer.
TOO MUCH OF A GOOD THING
Let's first talk about what happens when we have too much brain time. You might be familiar with the documentary called Social Dilemma but if you haven’t seen it I’ll sum up some points below. Social media can be very hard on our mental health. With social media you may notice over time that you have increased feelings of anxiety, overstimulation, comparison thinking, increased depression, lower confidence and more stress. Social media can be great. I love that I can create content that helps people on my YouTube channel but there can be too much of a good thing. As mentioned above there is some emotional baggage that comes with overly using social media.
INCREASED DISTRACTION
In my own experience I have found that Instagram happens to keep me in a distracted mindset. After I realized I was struggling with a distracted mind and slower memory recall I tested only being on Instagram every other day and setting a timer but for me those things didn’t work because I would still fall into the black hole that is social media. Being that I have a full schedule I don’t like the feeling of being distracted and I noticed my mood would dip after being on social media. I realized that I was letting a lot of things slip by like my self-care so I wanted to give myself time and attention back.
TAKE A BREAK
One thing that you can do if you aren’t wanting to fully let go of social media is to practice setting a timer so you feel in control of how much time you spend. If you find that the timer doesn’t work because you get sucked in then you can try to have one day where you use social media and one day where you don’t in an effort to create balance. When I work with my clients in my holistic therapy sessions I have them create a client assessment form when they first start. One of the things that I look at is how much time they spend on social media and this will help me when I am assessing the symptoms they are coming to me about and how it can correlate with their relationship to social media. If they are coming to see me with depression and anxiety symptoms and they have reported spending a lot of time on social media this helps to let me know that they are potentially related.
Ultimately I decided that me and Instagram needed to separate. I still have my account for the purpose of my business if there are ever collaborations that I would like to do with other brands but I did delete the app from my phone and I don’t plan to add it back. I want to spend more time practicing what I preach and teach as a wellness coach so this is a way to refocus on that goal. If you are struggling with how to achieve your goals as well then I would encourage you to take a break from social media as well. Social media will always be around and it’s a great tool to connect with people but it is beneficial to take a break.
