Today’s blog post is on a topic that really excites me! Instead of calling it time management I’d like to also refer to it as time efficiency. We can choose to manage our time but we may not be doing the things that efficiently improve our lives. Each of us experiences time, it’s always moving forward but the question is are we spending our time efficiently? I’m going to share some of my best tips to reframe your mindset around time management.
ENERGY DRAINS AND RECOVERY
We inevitably will become tired throughout parts of our days or weeks and so on. When we are tired time slows down for us so we can recover. Recovery itself is fine but we need to be mindful of how it is that we are recovering. If you would like to increase your time efficiency you will need to organize and schedule your recovery times as well as what activities you’re doing to recover. Many of my clients that I work with in my holistic therapy practice struggle with managing their time on social media. Social media is very addictive in nature so the longer we are on it, the harder it can be to get away. It can be helpful to set a timer so you don’t overdo it. Choose other activities during your recovery time that will help with your self care and are not addictive. Some of these activities may be reading a book, coloring, something artistic such as painting or sculpting, journaling or using your Holistic Self Care Planner. Even though we have certain activities that we may love to do (for me it’s soap making). These activities are easier to control the amount of time spent on them because there is a less addictive chemical spike in the brain. They make us feel good but we are able to regulate ourselves when it’s time to walk away from them.
OPTIMIZE YOUR BEDTIME AND MORNING ROUTINE
Through my own personal experience I have found this to be one of the most effective ways to manage my time and that is using your bedtime ritual to set up your morning. Using your bedtime efficiently ensures that you are set up for success the next day. At bedtime I find it helpful to write out a list of things you need to get up and do in the morning. If you create a plan for yourself ahead of time then there is less wiggle room to get off task and you can focus on getting your tasks done. It’s also satisfying to cross things off a to-do list and practice good sleep hygiene!
KEEP ACCOUNTABLE
To keep yourself motivated and on track I recommend creating an accountability system where your time management is valuable and counts for something. If we say that we want to be efficient with our time but don’t follow through it can take a toll on us. Find an accountability partner to check in with to help you manage your time. One of the things I offer for my clients as a holistic therapist is being an accountability partner for them. Alternatively you can ask a friend or a family member. Ideally this will be someone who is equally interested in changing their behaviour or building better habits. Not all of our friends and family members will hold us accountable in the ways that we need to be so it’s important to find someone who is on a similar journey and values consistency.
When I personally practice these tips or share them with my clients, it gets results because these tips work so I am offering them to you to implement in your own life.
