Although I’ve tried different types of fasting over the years I haven’t tried OMAD yet so this post will focus on what OMAD is, how to get started and my experience on the first day. If you’re interested in trying fasting for yourself I am running a four week fasting for mental health challenge so I encourage you to join.
STARTING OUT
Although I’m not really a person who uses the scale often I did want to check in on what my current weight was before I started the process. I’ll be participating in OMAD for seven days to start and if I like it I will do thirty days. If I continue with the thirty day challenge I’ll check back in once a week to see what my weight is on the scale. My main goal in fasting is not weight loss, it’s mostly about structure and order. I noticed that my skin was looking dull so I did a full examination of my sleep hygiene, skincare routine, eating and exercise habits. OMAD is a good opportunity for my body to reset and improve the previous areas I mentioned as well as my mental health.
BREAKFAST
During breakfast time I had green tea as well as a coffee replacement. For my coffee replacement I blended it with coconut oil, cocoa powder, stevia and a pinch of salt to create a bulletproof hot cocoa. I also had my 32 ounces of water which I added lemon, apple cider vinegar, and stevia. I planned to have my meal around 3PM. The beverages that I had for breakfast definitely helped me to feel less fazed by the fast.
BREAKING THE FAST
I had planned to break my fast at 3PM however the day I started my OMAD journey I had a work conference scheduled for that time so instead of eating something just to eat I decided I wanted my first meal to be delicious and I waited a bit longer to break the fast. I did feel mentally hungry but not physically hungry nor did I feel like I needed to eat immediately. Throughout the day I was also drinking a lot of water and I had another green tea. When I did break my fast I made sure it was a well balanced and nutritious meal. It consisted of spaghetti squash, italian sausage, a large mixed greens salad and a berry cobbler for dessert.
THE NEXT DAY
Although I did sleep moderately the night I started OMAD it was more of a circumstantial thing due to me having to get up and check on my puppy. I don’t think the mild sleep was a result of the OMAD. I felt great when I woke up and my body felt light. I do feel as though the challenge is doable at least for seven days. Stay tuned to see if I do a two week OMAD challenge. I did check in on the scale the morning after but I won’t be doing that often as I mentioned. I find it less valuable than being aware of your own body and checking in with that.
I recognize that many people participating in OMAD are mainly interested in losing weight but as I mentioned in the beginning that is not my main goal. I’m more interested in doing this as a lifestyle. I’m going to be paying attention to how this challenge affects my time, my mental health and my overall body health. I look forward to updating you with my progress in all those areas.
