The Power Of Daily Gratitude And Self-Celebration for Depression, Anxiety, & Stress Management
Today’s post is all about a topic that I don’t feel gets enough attention in the self care world. I want to discuss the benefits and value of having a gratitude and self celebration practice. This practice is great if you’re looking to improve your mental health, manage stress and anxiety symptoms as well as stress symptoms. It increases our awareness of what goes on in our world and keeps us present. In this world of over stimulation it can be hard to stay present and this is a great tool to do so.
What is gratitude?
Gratitude is the art of being clear on the things that are going well in your life. Humanly speaking we have a tendency to first see things as not going well or not being successful. When we practice gratitude we gain the benefit of being able to appreciate the things that are actively going well and the things that are giving us a sense of stability in our life. Gratitude is beneficial because it keeps us centered and grounded in reality. Focusing on the things we want is future based thinking and can cause feelings of anxiety and focusing on things that have happened in the past can cause depression feelings.
Putting it into practice
My chosen method for practicing gratitude is creating statements that begin with “I am so thankful…” or “I am grateful…”. You’ll want to pick out things that are filling you up in the present time or day. It can be little things such as “I am so thankful for the clouds in the sky and how the sun is lighting up the mountains. I am grateful to be able to witness the beauty of this moment”. You’ll also want to include why you’re grateful for what it is that you have listed. For the above example that we listed we can say our reason for being grateful is that it’s a gift to be able to wake up and witness nature because not everyone had the same opportunity that day. Include as many details as possible when doing your gratitude practice. When we practice gratitude we are rewiring our neural pathways to think in a positive way. The more you practice the more you build the muscle and the easier it is for your brain to choose positivity going forwards.
Self Celebration
Self celebration is a beautiful way to see the good in you. We may be used to getting praise and compliments but we can’t rely on external validation to fulfill our lives. There will never be enough external affirmation to keep your mind satisfied because that is an inside job. Self celebration is a tool where you are working on seeing the good within yourself on a regular basis. I like to offer this as a tip for my therapy clients where we create a behaviour pattern of celebrating their wins. For example, I would say to myself “Good job, you cleaned the bathrooms today”. I’m taking a moment and celebrating internally for something that I’ve done. Praciting daily works in the same way that the gratitude practice does by building the muscle daily. As we practice we start to feel a different version of self satisfaction and confidence. This is a great way to cancel out self doubt or imposter symptoms you may have.
It can be hard to practice gratitude on a daily basis because life is always happening but if you practice gratitude you will see significant positive changes in your life.
