The Power Of Down Time: Holistic Therapy Tips For Anxiety: How To Feel Better
Today’s tips focus on the power of downtime and the value of not having anything that needs to be scheduled or focused on. I find this really valuable especially for people who are working on their anxiety or stress management or simply focusing on improving their overall wellness. Slowing down and not having every minute accounted for allows you to connect with yourself and figure out what you need. Sometimes we can be quite busy just tending our personal responsibilities and letting off steam by vegging out in front of a screen at the end of our action packed days. There's some magic attached to creating windows for intentional "me time" and self recovery where we feel more engagement, presence, and self connection.
Connect with yourself
Slowing down and not having every minute accounted for allows you to connect with yourself and figure out what you need. It’s important to tune in to ourselves and really ask our minds and bodies what they need. It may be cozying up in a comfortable piece of clothing or relaxing in a bath, whatever is calling to you at the moment. If you slow down and listen your body will typically tell you what it needs. Connecting with your inner self is something I work with many of my clients on and would love to help with if you find that’s something you’re struggling with.
Schedule it
The majority of us are so overwhelmed with our busy schedules that we forget to make quiet time for ourselves without our devices or someone relying on us. It’s important that you take time aside from your duties as a mom, wife, caretaker, etc for just you. You may need to plan your downtime and I know that may sound counterintuitive but oftentimes this is the only way you can achieve this much needed alone time.
Ditch the distractions
In addition to the positives of connecting with yourself to figure out what you need in the moment it's also valuable that you don’t have a point of attention during your downtime. It’s ideal that you set your devices aside so you don’t need to focus your attention on anything. I encourage you to go outside and get into nature whether that’s taking a walk, going to the beach or reading a book. If you’re looking to connect with yourself on a deeper level I would recommend implementing a journaling practice. Journaling will help you by getting your thoughts on paper so you are able to process them.
Quiet time
Quiet time is invaluable if you are seeking mental peace and calm and lower anxiety. Creating a relaxing space in your home where there are no external sounds such as tv, radio or phones gives you a chance to focus on your inner thoughts. Having space to focus on your thoughts will allow you to gain clarity on them. In a world that is constantly filled with noise it’s tremendously valuable that you allow yourself some quiet.
If you’re struggling to manage your stress and anxiety then I would strongly encourage you to do your best to implement the above tips into your life. Try to add more space in your life that is strictly dedicated to refilling your own cup, distraction free.
